Palmers II v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 22 Aug 2009 at 1.30
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 19 runs

Match report A close game, played in a very good spirit won by Bridge 2's batting first after another toss was won by Cap'n Langton.

Despite appearances, the pitch which looked like a really good batting track, had a major part to play as it deteriorated badly.

The first sign of this was Matania's dismissal - bowled by a ball that pitched halfway down but kept low. George Bushell, opening in the league for the first time, was unlucky only to post 14 with any number of potential run scoring shots on the off side going striaght to a fielder but showed enough patience and technique to make a good case for holding on to the opener's berth.

Tim Fuller batted very steadily as usual putting on 31 with young George and then 22 with Ben Porter who made 21 from only 12 balls - only one of which was a dot!

Phil Millard then joined Tim but not for long before Tim perished for a patient 20; another batsman undone by an odd bounce. Millard showed that he is more than just a banger by steadily accumulating valuable runs despite losing James Gardiner for 0, Kieran Peters for 0 after surviving the hat trick ball, Zahid for 12 and Toby Fuller for 0 before becoming the 9th wicket to fall having made 21. PJ and Bobby managed to scrape 4 together for the last wicket giving us a total of 127 from only 34 overs that funnily enough, always looked like giving us a chance.

Bridge's efforts in the field didnt get off to the best possible start with a dropped catch in the gulley and with the Palmers openers making 25 before being separated, Bridge needed to take every other opportunity that might be offered.

Zahid couldn't repeat his performances from recent weeks and was replaced up the hill by Tim Fuller who's pace should have been bang on to exploit the dodgy bounce and so it proved.

Toby, bowling a long spell down the hill was desperately unlucky only to pick up 3 wickets. By my reckoning, he beat the bat on at least 20 occasisons and could so easily have had far greater reward for what I think was probably his best spell of the year, including the game against Horsted Keynes where he collected a sixfer. With Tim Fuller picking up another 5 wicket bag (4 in his first spell of 10 overs) before nipping out the final wicket in his first of a second spell and Bobby nabbing an important wicket in a short spell of 4 overs, Bridge succesfully defended their 4th lowest score of the season. A feature of the Bridge performance was the secure catching (look away Mallard) with Kieran, PJ, Ben, Zahid and Toby all safely pouching.

Another fine performance by team Fuller!

Those of you who read last week's report will remember that we set ourselves a target for the season of winning and drawing more games than we lost - the record now stands as won 4, lost 5 and drawn 3 so we have achieved that.

As I type, the only relevant result for us from yesterday's games still be shown on the web is Streat's game. If they managed less than 10 points, Bridge find themselves sitting in 4th, 15 points behind Dormansland in 3rd. If only we could have taken the last wicket in those games against Lindfield and Ardingly!
