Match report The Sunday 2s are Back!!
After a brief interlude the Sunday 2s are back, with a new blend of youth and experience, ready to take on all comers including Lingfield at their Newchapel ground. Spying a rather green wicket we put them in and soon Tyson and Kings were thundering in. They both bowled excellently with extended spells making the Lingfield openers play and miss frequently, and tying them down which was a feat with such small boundaries. However, it took the flighted spin of T Woodman to break the partnership with a fine catch from Mason. Woodman went on to bowl with great resilience and took 2 further wickets, including a classic leg spinner’s wicket as the batsman played up the line of leg only to see the ball hit middle and off! Marlpit Hill newcomers Jordan and Waterhouse then bowled consistently with accuracy and control, picking up 2 wickets each, with Shah also contributing with 4 overs after a 30 year break. Amongst an excellent overall fielding performance, Cabassi stood out as exceptional, saving many runs on both boundaries. We were set 235 to win.
Batting began well with a solid ‘anchor’ role from Murphy and a spectacular display of hard hitting from Joyce, who made 39 in no time. Cabassi was out early to a good catch, but Mason batted very well for his top score of 13, playing some fine shots with great confidence. The growing crowd (word had got around ) were further entertained by Waterhouse’s unfortunate but spectacular run out, before Jordan restored order playing elegantly and confidently, punishing the bad ball well, and showing strong ability that we’ll try and keep hidden from the 1s. J Woodman helped out with a quick 50 (Sat 1s please note), before Jordan completed a fine 60 not out. Unfortunately we came up a few runs short, but this was an impressive display from one and all. Man of the Match without question goes to Josh Mason for his excellent batting and fine fielding performances.
