Halstead v Edenbridge Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 12 Jul 2009 at 2.30
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report On a fairly hot day, the might 10-men Bridge side made their way over to Halstead. With an ominous ‘un-cut’, extremely green wicket, the Halstead skipper, to our surprise, chose to bat first.

After an early wicket, Halstead built a strong partnership, taking their score to 90-1 after 20 overs. Throughout the first half, Bridge’s enthusiasm seemed to drop dramatically. The wicket gave a lot of hope, but luck was not on our side and the opening batter scrambled his way to 46 and their number 3 went hard and scored a solid 60. Levi bowled tight lines and at good speed to cause trouble within the Halstead batsmen.

Debutant Wood, came back on in his first over after drinks and after having convinced the skipper to bowl him down the hill, the opening bat snicked off after a very wobbly catch from Seb Goodhew. Duncan Rogers and Goodhew came on and bowled extended spells, keeping the run rate constant, but always threatening the Halstead batsmen on the pitch which was doing an awful lot for the bowlers.

Wickets then started tumbling and only one bat then had a bit of resistance and smashed his way to a quick fire 30. All in all, Bridge came back extremely well and bowled Halstead out for a competitive 205 – after a direct hit run-out from soon-to-be self-confessed ‘hero’, captain George Bantin. All seam bowlers had a share of the wickets and there was no real stand-out bowler, but a good team effort in the field.

Needing just over 5 an over from their 40 overs, Bridge started slowly, losing two early wickets. Barry Warburton then came back from early retirement and made his way to a classy 23, before holding out in the deep. Things were not looking brilliant for Bridge after only scoring 70 and having lost 3 wickets by drinks.

When Bridge lost another few wickets, for minimal runs, up stepped Seb Goodhew and George Bantin for a game-changing partnership. After Goodhew was dropped on 24, he made Halstead pay after smashing all bowlers around the park (including a HUGE six straight down the ground – timed and middled to perfection!), getting himself in, but unfortunately losing his wicket on 44. Bantin on the other hand thought nothing of the 8 an over run rate, and smashed sixes here there and everywhere, to set up a brilliant ending of 17 off 8 balls.
Bridge had the upper hand, with Bantin in such fine form, running quick singles to the keeper in order to keep the strike and then hitting the odd boundary here and there. As it came to the last over, needing 16 to win, the two dot balls to start made the Bridge camp nervous. A huge leg side six then got the team’s hopes up and a two from Bantin made it 4 from the last ball in order to win the game.
Every single Halstead playing stood waiting on the boundary, and a vacant offside, backward off square area, it seemed all set-up for a tie. But, Bantin, for the first time in the game really got hold of one and nailed what seemed to match Goodhew’s six earlier on in the game and became a hero to win the game for Bridge.

It was a cracking game to play in, played in good heart – with a bit of competitiveness on the side – but Edenbridge came out worthy winners, with George Bantin leading from the front and putting in a Man of the Match performance for his phenomenal innings, to change the game around.
