Holmesdale v Edenbridge Cricket Club Under 15 on Sun 28 Jun 2009 at 10.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won By 10 Wickets (with 10.5 overs to spare)

Match report In a week when the great Michael Jackson passed away, it was disappointing that there was no minute silence for the King Of Pop. However, we couldn't blame anything on the beautiful sunshine this morning and we certainly had a good time - and the match ended with a real Thriller of a on !
Without Cloughie to manage the team (no doubt still recovering in the clinic), the reigns were left with Coach Peters to inspire the boys to a straightforward victory which included a 'cunning plan' to win some extra points.
Captain Freeman lost the toss for the first time this season, so we attended the field determined to skittle them out for a lowly score. Skipper headed the way in the bowling with just 17 runs from his four overs (including one wicket) and Bency came on to follow up on his excellent session at Groombridge to end up with three wickets from three overs (for just eight runs). There were also three superb run outs which left the batsmen moon walking back to the pavillion and before we knew it we had them at 52 for 8.
Now for the master plan.....if we were to bowl them all out for below 75, we would be unable to pick up any batting points - a mad ruling by the governing bodies. So instructions came from Coach to Skipper to bring on Anderson and Bushell Junior to let them get some runs. This didn't work as they bowled very tight (against instructions and up for the chop next week). Vickery understood the message loud and clear and bowled the required 'load of tosh' as Holmesdale scraped together 95 all out - 100 would have been nice to give us a second batting point, but then perhaps we were being too on.
With greed at the forefront of management minds, a total lack of teas/coffee/cake made for a disppointing break. All was not lost though as Kate Freeman arrived (following a clear directive from Nick) with bottles of lager to satisfy the hierarchy. A brief flyover by a fighter jet, bringing reminiscing from Scorer Ken of his days when he fought for his country from West Malling, was followed by a focused effort by our opening pair in the heat of the midday sun.
Having seen opening partnerships in the previous two weeks of 96 (world record for the Border League) and 91, our expectations were high - we were not disappointed as we strolled to victory without the loss of any wickets - Don't Stop Till You Get Enough was the instruction from the management !
George Bushell, scoring 46, has now scored over 230 runs in his last five innings - being out only three times in this period, his average is over 75.
However, man of the match has to go to Ben Phillips for his second 50 not out in consecutive weeks. But, what of the Thriller I hear you shout...
Well, with drinks served (water only) when we were on 76, Coach Peters gave instructions to Phillips that they should get to 94 or 95 and then we needed a six to get above 100 and hence earn two batting points. Nobody was disappointed as we arrived on 95 - firstly, Bushell had a go and failed (having previous smashed a boundary against Mrs Peters' car), but when Phillips was given the opportunity he duly siezed the moment (carpe diem), hitting a glorious six.
Coincidentally, when Coach Peters arrived home to explain the damage to the car of his wonderful wife, she explained that his own car (which she had taken to the Under 13s match at Leigh) had also received a dent from a boundary !
Finally, Kate Freeman (who is once again laying on teas for the 'biggy' next week against Speldhurst), has a reminder for everyone that the Freemans will once again be holding their end of season BBQ on Sunday 19th July (after our match a Cowdrey)....let's make sure we have reason to celebrate by beating Spelhurst next week !
