Edenbridge Cricket Club Under 15 v Crowborough on Sun 24 May 2009 at 10.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won By 1 Run

Match report A close and exciting match for the Under 15s.
Missing some key players (2 of whom decided to let us know on Sunday morning) we welcomed Harry back (ever present this year!), Ethan Johns from the U14s and a debutant in Tom Pearce.
Bridge batted first on an excellent pitch and, despite accurate Borough bowling, Ben and George got us off to a solid start. George timed his innings beautifully and opened up against the second string bowlers with some devastating blows in his 50 (retired).
Good support in the later overs from Freeman and Peters (31 retired) saw full batting bonus points gained.
After another gigantic tea provided by Freeman Catering Services (est.2009), the boys went out to field.
Needing better than 7 an over to win may have put off some lesser teams. Borough, however, belied their lowly place in the league and were always in the hunt. Hicks and Turner put on around 80 runs in a spectacular display of hitting (slowed only by this umpire managing to stop a straight drive with a late hop, pathetic!). Our bowling was not even that bad! Particular mention must go to Tom on his debut, he could be real find.
Luckily our captain (doing a sterling job under mounting pressure) noticed young Ethan hiding down at deep cover and called him up to bowl over 20. Bowling a good length on off stump at (very) slow medium was just what the doctor ordered. Three wickets tumbled and the game swung back towards Bridge.
George did his darndest in Over 21 to bring the oppo back into the game leaving Ethan to defend the 8 needed to win on the last over, which, 5 balls later, had become 4 to win.
The final delivery was cracked to David on the extra cover boundary. DW had fortunately regained his composure after an unusually poor day in the field, he gathered the ball cleanly and ran in towards the stumps as the runners turned for a second.
Of course David now had 10 fielders shouting at him and bodies running everywhere. The scene suddenly turned into slow motion. Inexplicably David decided to curtail his march to victory and suddenly threw the ball to Ethan who was stood beside the stumps. Rather more explicably, Ethan let the ball through his legs. Harry then decided to pick up the ball, beside the stumps. All Harry had to do to win the match was to remove the bails, both batsmen being stranded in mid-pitch. The howling from all the fielders had now reached a crescendo and I for one could see the look in Harry's eyes, and it was not comforting.
Harry, summoning up his (two?) years of cricketing acumen, then, even more inexplicably, shaped to throw to the wicket keeper. Hollywood would have had Harry releasing the ball, missing everyone and Crowborough winning the match with a 7 (3 run plus 4 overthrows). Stranger things have happened.
Fortunately, for whatever reason, Harry eventually changed his mind and removed the bails and the match was won.
Crowborough can count themselves very unlucky, they played brilliantly and contributed fully to what is probably the highest scoring junior match seen at Blossoms. Their boys were also very sporting, did not rise to our captains corny baiting, nor even complain about the umpire doing some inadvertant fielding.
A great fun morning, congratulations to all those involved.
