Edenbridge Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Cudham Wyse on Sun 15 Jun 2008 at 2.30
Match was Drawn

Match report Well this sunday's team once again had a youthful outlook to it with juniors taking pride of place in the team. We lost the toss and unfortunately got put into bat, which was probably the decision that cost us the match.

An inspirational idea of George Bantin was to put in to open the batting the young Luke Boakes and Levi Caruana. It was an idea which gave us our best opening partnership of the season (and Bantin will never let it go). Levi played an attacking role while Luke took his time, taking these openers to a partnership of 38 before Levi went for one "Bantin" shot too many, and was bowled for 29. However, one junior replaced another, and Seb Goodhew came to the crease! He took a long time to get started, but he and Luke Boakes paced themselves, and it paid off. By the time that Luke (21) was caught trying to sweep, and George Bantin (17) came into to swiftly smash a couple of boundaries (including a huge six over cow-corner) we were looking solid on 120-3. With little time left batsmen were merely urged for quick runs, with Jack Barker (16) and Dan Ott (8) getting out to attacking attempts. We were treated at the end of the innings to a stunning array of slogs by Sam Thurstan, who swung like a pedulum for 14 not out off 5 balls faced. However, the star of the show was Seb Goodhew (to our despair as he can't boast modesty as a talent) who scored 69 not out, leaving us with a score of 194-5 at the end of our innings.

We felt understandably confident of this score, with a young team who have plenty of wicket taking potential, we knew this was a defendable score.
Our confidence grew when Nick Jeffreys yorked the opening batsman in his first over with a swinging ball dangerous for anyone. They were clearly on the back foot and defending for a draw straight after Mike Mills got their number 3 to drag on.
Unfortunately, our optimism was short lived, as it seems Cudham Wyse have atleast mastered bat-on-ball using the forward defensive. Infact, to give you some idea of how defensive they were...their opening batsman batted through the entire innings...and got 32 not out in those 37 overs!!! THIS AIN'T NO TEST CRICKET!
As you can guess, we did not get the wickets we needed...but we did get a possible moment of the season. With not long to go, Brian Gibbs came on to bowl his first over in cricket. An inspired bowling change I felt, and Brian bowled their number 7 middle stump! By this point we had 7 slips and a gully, and the game was over. It was a draw, and a game we should have put more pressure on the batsmen, but it didn't come off for us in the end. Sam Thurstan took 2-12, and finished with the best figures, and Danny Ott took a catch off Jack Barker (1-15). Cudham Wyse finished on 98-6 (96 runs behind) and the game was a draw.

However, Man of the Match goes to Seb Goodhew (for his 69 not out)!

TEAS: now I have had many compliments from both sides about the teas, and it;s always nice to hear! But I cannot take all the credit! It was an Ott/Bantin/Goodhew last minute, Sunday morning tea which seemed to get 9/10. Hopefully we wont get our wires crossed about whose doing teas this week I hope (will we Thurstan)!
