Poynings v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Away vs Poynings! Well they were 4th in the league and possible challengers who have already won 3 of their 5 games this season. We were 2 above the relegation zone, looking or just our 2nd league win of the season. To add to our troubles, we were missing the talents of wicket keeper/batsman Jon Woodman, and ofcourse our most talented (AHEM) bowler/captain Howard Johnson who was holidaying in Portugal.

This did not add up to the best of starts...and it was made even worse when vice-come-captain Danny Ott found he had no idea where he was going. So we thought...M23 is close enough right????

When we did find the pitch, which was not as stressful as we thought, our warm-up started with a rugby ball...but with the trouble some of us had trying to catch THAT ball it's fair to say I was more than a little nervous.

We won the toss, that I didn't want to do, and put them in to bat. It turned out to be a good decision...WE LOVE YOU ANDY WE DO, WE LOVE YOU ANDY WE DO, WE LOVE YOU ANDY WE DO, OHHHH HILLY WE LOVE YOU! Yes Mr Hill was in fine form this week, and his figures show just how impressive he was today. But what they do not show you is...the consistent bowling of off-stump, and more importantly THE HATTRICK!!!!! Bowled, caught and LBW! 3 balls of masterclass from Hilly put us in the position of 36/5 with Mr Hill taking all the wickets! He finished with 6/35 bowling and a high catch in the field to take the final wicket of Dan Ott's bowling (1/6). I think you'll agree not a bad effort. Other mentions must go to Gat Fuller who bowled very well with little reward at first but got his 2/45.
(I must also add personal apologies to Tim Cox when I dropped the simplest of slip catches. Sorry Coxy)

We ended up restricting them to 126ao, on a tiny pitch and were very confident of getting the runs.
Unfortunately, tempers already raged when the home team insisted we use the 30 minutes batting time they didn't use BEFORE the tea break!
After a quickfire 11 runs Tim Cox was bowled, but the sensible batting of Alby Joyce (also stand-in keeper for the day) and Seb Goodhew, we came in at tea with less than 100 runs needed to win with 9 wickets remaining.

After tea, Joycie took his time (as we had plenty of it) to get to 32 runs, and then got caught by an absolute stunner of a catch (diving full-stretch to his left at point), and Seb Goodhew scored 18 supporting. Bantin hit a struggling 8 (please see details of his wicket below) before the familiar face of Phil Millard made a return (but sadly just for 4 runs).
We were then left with Scott Beaumont (19*) at the crease, who was in a real rush hitting 2 sixes straight over the bowlers head.

We made the runs with plenty of time to spare, and making us all miss Howad that little bit less (yes howard - I have a 100% record HAHA!) A good win, and obviously Andy Hill gets the Man of the Match with that performance.

However, we have other awards still. Dick of the Day must go to George Bantin and his attempted reverse sweep to a full, straight delivery that took him middle stump. In the words of Graham Cox "What a C***!" fully deserved if you saw it for yourself. GEORGE BANTIN WAS DICK OF THE DAY!

TEA: Well we were a little disappointed (weren't we Tim "must have a strop" Cox) at the timing of tea. We then found that it was all very home made, and despite the obvious effort and energy the wives had gone to, it just didn't quite take the fancy of some of us. We give the official edenbridge tea rating of Poynings CC as a 6/10. (THIS FIGURE MAY POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THE IRATE ATMOSPHERE)
