Horsmonden v Edenbridge Cricket Club Under 15 on Sun 29 Jun 2008 at 10.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Lost by 49 runs

Match report I arrived early to find the opposition warming up in their Waitrose sponsored shirts all wielding their Jimmy Adams autographed bats. They looked good but 2 years ago we had turned them over twice. When our lads turned up I was greeted with the fact that it had been one hell of an all night party and lets hope we bat first. We were a man short but Seb whipped out his mobile to phone a friend and if by magic turned up in the back of a car 30 seconds later. Jack Barker went from spectator to No 3 batsman and temporary member of Edenbridge cricket club in less than a minute . I was slightly concerned as he went to the boot of the car only to appear with a set of golf clubs.I checked the Border League rules but surprisingly it seemed it would be OK. Could we salvage some points by claiming insanity.
Anyway we lost the toss and had to field first. Henry and Levi opened the bowling and for the first couple of overs we kept things tight. Henry bowled the opener with a swinging full toss. Then the batsmen took over as we forgot about line and length and continually pitched the ball too short. Their No2 and No3 batsmen both retired on 50 and Edenbridge heads went down. Our temporary member took 2 late wickets as they strived for maximum batting points. They came up short at 147 for 5.
However this total was "doable" if we batted sensibly. Levi tried to hit a straight ball over midwicket and was bowled for 2 - not the start we wanted. Then Jack Barker joined Seb at the wicket and the score began to mount. Poor Seb was having one of those days when every shot was finding a fielder. It didn't help that the pitch was breaking up which did for Jack and then Nathan both bowled by balls that kept low. Seb then got a ball that stopped on him and was caught for a gutsey 26. No sooner had Alex and Henry come together than the drinks break was taken. I told them to play themselves in and not take any risks. In the over after the interval Alex steared the ball straight to the fielder at backward point. With a scream that hasn't been heard since William Wallace ran towards the English, Henry took off and there was only going to be one outcome. Alex doesn't do fast singles which Henry learnt to his cost. Alex hit three 4s in one over but like Seb then got a ball that stopped and was caught off a leading edge. Horsmonden then applied the squeeze on our tail enders and we were all out for 98 with 3 overs to spare. Although H got their revenge for the results 2 years ago with a little more application we could have got a lot closer to their score especially if we had replicated the form with bat and ball that we had shown against Withyham the previous Sunday.
