Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Hurstpierpoint II on Sat 27 Aug 2016 at 13:00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 185 runs

Match report Well, only one side was interested in playing a game of cricket today I'm afraid. Pre game discussions amongst EB's senior pros was focussed upon what we should do if we win the toss. Points were needed in order to keep up the chase on Streat. The conclusion arrived at was that we should lose the toss, something captain Fisty has shown himself to be very adept at. However, borrowing Coxy's £2 coin soon put the mockers on that. Fisty's decision: We bat.
So out he strode (eventually !) with Joycey for an opening stand that soon had Hurst's heads weighing heavy & their youngsters thinking about other things whilst wandering the field like lost sheep. On & on the two of them went, racking up an opening partnership of around 160 before Joycey fell to a fine catch for his top score of the season. Fisty continued on his merry way towards another 100 until Kingy's voice seemed to fail him & there was a bit of a mixup. Oooops !
Despite all that, there seemed to be a distinct lack of excitement on the part of Hurst & their nine bowlers. A mammoth score seemed on the cards unless an early declaration ended proceedings. Sure enough, with Kingy & Mike swinging the willow, Fisty donned his shirt for the formal declaration after 41 overs.
Hurst's reply got off to a slow start & got slower. Captain Green (a long lost friend of Wardy's) opened up & immediately closed down. Nothing it seemed was going to pass his bat so as to give us any kind of chance. His second run, which came after about a dozen overs, was cheered to the rooftops by his team. Hily had a five over opening spell that cost him two runs. But his opening partner, Jimmy Witt, was more pricey going for 21 off his 14 overs, but taking five wickets in the process. The first three of those all went down as Ct Hill, B Witt, pushing Hilly jnr up to number 6 in the leagues rankings for outfield catches.
Still the Hurst captain stuck to his guns & grinded it out, moving towards double figures. Finally, with the introduction of our mystery spinner Dan Martin we managed to get through Captain Green's defences with Dan's top spinner trapping him in front, having earlier failed to read Dan's second ball wrong 'un. A monumental mental effort on the skipper's part, taking best part of 30 overs to score 12. But sadly it spoilt a game of cricket.
After that, it was just a case of chipping away, Dan bowling superbly for the stunning figures of 4 for 4 & mopping up the tail.
So we bagged 30 points & keep the pressure up on Streat. They remain 10 points ahead of us & play Brunswick, the league leaders, in their final game. A 30 point win for us next week & Streat failing to win may well see us promoted. If we get any more games like this one next season then your roving reporter will be slitting his wrists I think !!
