Match report Palmers in the Palm of Our Hand by your Special Correspondent Mr. Teacox (the man in the red Maestro with the chewy mints and black lab pup)

A trip to newly promoted Palmers in the fine city of Brighton & Hove, truly "Sussex by The Sea". After an uneventful trip down the M23 we circumnavigated (took the wrong turning) the ground looking for an entrance, only to be told there wasn't one & we should park on the road. Guest captain for the day, Mr Teacox (yes --- look at the oppo's scorebook !!) was duly invited to call & (thankfully) did so wrongly thus condemning us to the field.'Fingers' Fuller started up in the usual fashion, along with 'Enry Evans & the two Palmers openers were soon sending balls over slip, over gully, over square leg, over everything but nothing going to hand (not surprising with Gatt back in the side!). Somehow they managed to slog (elegantly play) their way to a run a ball 50 partnership. Three quick wickets from 'H' Johnson's searing pace & unplayable lift slowed the scoring, & had we managed to keep the Palmers No. 4 bat in (Group Captain Gavin Ftang Ftang Oleh Biscuit Barrell Beaty) maybe we would have only been chasing 60. Unfortunatley he bought it against H's pace. Then ex Edenbridge stalwart Nick Reason bludgeoned his way to fifty to up the score rate. All in all the guest skipper agreed that we had bowled & fielded creditablly under the circumstances (especially the many other guest players), Palmers closing at 227 for 7 off 41 overs.

Tea saw the fair Sussex city catching the tail end of Hurricane Dean & openers Teacox & Joyce emerged to driving drizzle & squally showers, during one of which Joyce succumbed whilst attempting to wipe the drizzle from his brow. Teacox & Watts then manfully struggled on in the teeth of the gale & the driving rain for another dozen overs before oppo skipper finally decided he was never going to shift the obdurate Watts & called it a day with the score on 38 for 1.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Palmers No. 4 bat (see above),resplendant with waxed handlebar moustache, being greeted by a flypast of second world war fighters & an inevitable 'chirp' from Mr Bantin about Spitfires !

TEA: Good cuppa, but 'make your own' sandwiches ? Please !!! 4/10 I'm afraid.
