St Francis v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 19 May 2007 at 2.00

Match report This Saturday saw Edenbridge visit the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath not on any hospital visit, although we might have done later to see poor Gopi, but to play the Sri Lankan eleven of St. Francis who play in the hospital grounds. Always an exciting fixture due to the way the Sri Lankan's play their cricket this fixture proved no exception. After winning the toss and asking St. Francis to bat what followed was cricket mayhem as on a relatively small ground the opener Dhanisk proceeded to cart the ball to all areas of the ground regardless of the delivery being good, bad or indifferent. In fact so dominant was he that when he celebrated his century St. Francis had 119 on the board after only 14 overs. This was no lucky innings as this lad had all the shots and rarely did he make a false stroke in an eventual knock of 164 albeit being dropped off a very sharp chance by Mick Mills when in single figures. Supported well by Chameera who made a classy 49 St. Francis were able to declare after only 35 overs on an intimidating total of 255. Edenbridge's bowler's stuck manfully to their task but are unlikely to come up against such a battering for the rest of the season. PC Williams was the pick of the bunch picking up 6 wickets but Mick Mills also bowled well in a demanding spell into the wind and up against batsman looking to build on Dhanisk's brutal innings. In the field two fine catches from the cheetah, AKA Scott Beaumont, one a reflex catch at first slip and the other a good catch in the deep meant that while 255 was intimidating it could quite easily have been 300+.
Edenbridge started their innings well with Tim Cox hitting a four and six in Richard Maharaj's first over but after being caught at square leg off a short ball destined for the boundary and John Woodman given out LBW both openers had gone with only a handful on the board. Scott 'Cheetah' Beaumont then made a breezy 21 before being caught and bowled and it was left to Graham Cox and Alan Joyce to try and keep the run rate going to give the visiting side an outside chance of victory. For a while the runs did come as Joyce favouring his lofted straight drive and Cox putting away the bad ball started to make the Sri Lankans think as the bowling changes came. Joyce eventually made an attractive 37 before being bowled by a straight one and with Cox out for 66 bowled by a decent delivery from Gopi it was time to hold out for a draw with the target a remote possibility. This was achieved by good defensive batting by both PC Williams and in the last couple of overs Niraj Parrera playing against his fellow countryman. The last couple of overs though were marred by the accident to the popular St. Francis bowler Gopi who trying to catch a fiercely hit return from the bat of PC Williams was hit in the mouth. He was quickly dispatched to the hospital only 200 yards away and we sincerely wish him all the best and hope he has a good dental plan. Edenbridge picked up just 9 points from this draw but after the batting mayhem faced in the first innings avoiding defeat was a good result.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Andy 'Happy' Hill's face on being asked to bowl a second spell while the St. Francis centurion remained at the wicket. I don't think he quite meant the ".......thanks Skip" uttered as he took his jumper off.

TEAS: 5/10 expectations were high for a typical St. Francis tea with spicy pastries and curried dips as we have had previously. However, this time a conventional tea was waiting for us which while attractive on the sandwich front had a disappointing selection of fancy pan crumbles (tarts) despite the welcome offering of Jaffa Cakes (first of the season), but in very short supply, and the good old standby the evergreen Cadbury chocolate roll.
