Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hurstpierpoint on Sat 12 May 2007 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won Won by 5 wickets

Match report After defeat to Hurstpierpoint in the cup the previous week Edenbridge had the opportunity to make amends as the league season started against the same opposition. Winning the toss the home side had no hesitation in asking Hurst to bat on a wicket that was slightly damp, after the nights heavy rain, with a green hue in direct contrast to the strip the previous week that played hard and true. Scoring runs proved difficult for Hurst as tight bowling, a low slow wicket and lush outfield made life difficult. Eventually the pressure told and with both openers winkled out by Tim Cox and Gatt Fuller the home side were really in the driving seat when Mat Parsons was spectacularly caught by PC Simon Williams off Tim Cox for 0. Readers of this column will remember Mr. Parsons match winning 50 of the previous week and his downfall was a big blow to the away side. Pressure was maintained on the later batsman by some fine bowling by all concerned including Andy 'Happy' Hill, PC Williams, Tim Cox who worked hard up the hill (no pun intended)into a strong breeze and Mick Mills who was going well until a slight muscle pull ended his mean spell. In addition, keen fielding especially by Simon Walker was a feature of the afternoon. However, a timely knock by Ken Robert (25) ably supporting Dave Parsons Senior (32) started to tick the scoreboard over until sharp work in the field by PC Williams saw Parsons run out. From there on wickets fell steadily and Hurst's total of 133 off their 47 overs was always going to be on the low side.
A new opening partnership of Woodman and Hill, due to the latter having to leave early on domestic duties, put on a brisk 50 before the clock had Hill stumped for 18 off the beguiling spin of Coleman. Tim Cox then joined Woodman and patient batting on a still slow track saw the score tick along before two LBW decisions saw the end of both as they started to take control. Beaumont soon followed marooned half way down the wicket like a stricken oil tanker stumped off the canny left arm loopers of Parsons Senior. At 88 for 4 Hurst felt they had a slight chance but while their wicket keeper became more vociferous by the minute sensible batting by Graham Cox and Alan Joyce added 48 before Cox holed out off a top edge 8 runs short of the target which was duly achieved with two overs to spare of the allotted 20 in the last hour. A fine showing by all concerned saw Edenbridge pick up 24 points and a very satisfactory start to the league programme.
MEMORABLE MOMENT: PC Williams stunning catch although I think he is showing off now due to his position of authority and shiny new boots.
TEAS: As Harold Macmillan once said "Edenbridge Cricket Club have never had it so good" and it is fair to say that he was probably referring to Gareth Fuller's week end offering. A moist neatly squared ginger cake was artistically accompanied by a rare selection of jam fancies (tarts) and the old favourite of Cadbury chocolate roll's elegantly displayed in all their purple finery. However, the 'piece de resistance' was surely the beef and mustard sandwiches with no holds barred when it came to the hot yellow stuff lovingly drizzled over the fine British beef. An absolute master class in sandwich making. Special mention must also go to the much underated cheese and pickle triangles. They most certainly stood out nestled by the bowl of baby toms in this high quality cullinary extravaganza from our demon fast bowler. Gareth we salute you.
