Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hurstpierpoint on Sat 05 May 2007 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Lost Lost by 4 wickets

Match report The first round of the Wisdom Cup ended in defeat for ECC after losing the toss and being asked to bat first in this 40 over per side knockout. On a firm and true track the opening pair of Tim Cox and John Woodman started well before losing Cox to a ball that kept a fraction low with 30 on the board. Woodman soon followed being well caught in the gully from his familiar cut shot that had '4' written all over it. Beaumont and Joyce both went cheaply bowled by Mat Parson's new slinging action and at 77 for 4 Hurstpierpoint must have been more than satisfied on a wicket where the home side should have been aiming for 180 as a minimum. Graham Cox by this time had been able to judge the pace of the wicket and take full advantage of the bad ball that came his way. With Andy Hill out at 103, another victim of the 'slinga', Cox and Tim Fuller looked to consolidate and rebuild the innings with the main intention that the home side batted through the full 40 overs. With Cox reaching his 50 and Tim Fuller beginning to dig in a 180+ score should have been achieved but when Cox was caught on the boundary and Fuller leg before, for a patient 21, the later order batsman were unable to score sufficient runs despite one or two lusty blows. A total of 161 was disappointing on a good track and even more so that Edenbridge were unable to bat through the allotted number of overs.
Hurstpierpoint started slowly and with Micky Mills taking a wicket in his opening over followed up by the wicket of Parsons senior, a cultured and experienced no.3, the pressure was beginning to tell on the away side who suddenly found themselves needing 6.5 runs an over thanks to some tight bowling and keen fielding. However, Mat Parsons still remained at the crease, and while tied down early on, was very much the key wicket that Edenbridge needed to win the game. With wickets steadily falling and with only 35/40 runs needed off the last 5 overs Parsons was able to accelerate and with able support from Hoyle go to 50 and ensure Hurstpierpoint reached their target with 7 balls to spare.
MEMORABLE MOMENT: Mature club President Jack Atkinson walking on to the wicket during the game to tell Mike Mills a package had been left in the pavilion for him (which Mick subsequently forgot). Jack on being asked if he would like to field at first slip while he was out here replied "........I would but my eyes aren't what they used to be."
TEAS: * Fuller Catering on this showing must be well on their way to their objective of a first Michelin Star. Tim's 6 month sabbatical in Paris, prior to the season, studying at The Ritz, two heady nights with Marco Pierre White and Jamie Oliver's latest hard back have clearly made an impact and never more so with Saturdays 'cup special' offering. The chocolate chip banana cake and baby tomatoes coupled with the sausage rolls and egg sandwiches, with the slight hint of Heinz salad cream, were an utter delight. A request from Tim for £25, in contribution, was scandalous compared to the exquisite fare served up by this couple providing real competition to the Rue brothers.
