Cowfold v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 20 Aug 2011 at 1:30
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 27 runs

Match report Visiting 2nd place Cowfold with a single point advantage at the top of the table, Edenbridge had the opportunity to secure promotion from Division 4 and, if all went very well, put ourselves in prime position to win the division at the final game next weekend.

Losing yet another toss, skipper Phil was entirely unsurprised to be asked to bat first, especialy since Cowfold's stand in skipper for the day Ian Robinson is Division 4s leading wicket taker with 47 before the start.

Joycie and Stephen started well against two good bowlers; Alan in particular looked to be carrying over his great form from last week but managed to find fielders with a whole string of shots out of the middle.

Once the openers had been separated, the colossus that is Ward strode to the wicket where he remained almost to the end on his way to an invaluable 80. No other batsman was able to really get going but we did manage to keep Nick company finally allowing Phil to declare with maximum batting points and importantly, denying Cowfold the four points they would have picked up had they taken the last 2 bridge wickets.

Returning from his spell in the first team, Toby opended the bowling with Stephen and the pair of them looked hostile and accurate throghout their spells - Smithy's maximum 7 over first spell yielding 2 for 26 (second spell of 7 produced 2 for 24) and Toby's excellent 11 overs off the reel returning 4 for 42

Bowling support provided by Max Hill who will be a core player in the team next year, George Lee who won the award for unluckiest bowler of the day and could so easily have had more than the single scalp plus Bushy and Rory Martin who once again impressed with his pace generated from a one yard run up!

Catching and ground fielding not of our very highest standard but good enough to support the bowlers and allow a close run victory and guarantee promotion.

Special mention to Kieran who kept exceptionally well; at least on a par with the best he has been this season.

Unlike last year when the team travelled to the final league game needing to catch up 12 points, we go into next week's game needing 8 points only to go one better than last year's efforts.
