Horsted Keynes 2 v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 30 Jul 2011 at 2pm
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won 65 runs

Match report Edenbridge travelled to Horsted Keynes in desperate need of a result to maintain pressure at the top of Division 4 and upon arrival the first problem was to identify the strip. Fortunately, the groundsman had marked the pitch so we could tell where it was. Memories of Jon Woodman's split lip whilst batting for the 1s here last year were much to the fore and everyone confidently predicted that the pitch would be a nightmare to bat on so when Matania lost the toss yet again and Bridge were inserted, thoughts of last week's dismal batting performance were uppermost in many minds - not least Horsted's captain who very cheerfully asked me all about it as we were doing the toss.

Despite looking like someone's back garden (not mine, despite Dave Putman's ministrations), the pitch was absolutely fine and did practically nothing untoward all day.

Losing Joycie and then Tim inside the first 2 overs meant that it was essential for one of the top order batsmen to drop anchor and bat for as long as possible. Cue Matania vintage 2010 and the first time the opener had managed a lengthy knock this year. Phil batted for the whole 39 overs for his undefeated 37 (with the help of Lewis as a runner for most of the time) which allowed firstly Lewis to flourish; 34 from 50 balls and getting out just as it was starting to look like he might repeat his fantastic knock at Cuckfield earlier in the season but this only meant that George Bushell joined Phil at the wicket. After a careful start in rebuilding the 'bridge innings, George really found some fluency and unleashed a barrage against the Horsted bowling attack. His eventual 122 coming from only 62 balls and featured the following incredible stats:
50 from 37 balls, 100 from 57 balls and a sequence of 17 balls all scored from. 4 of his total of 10 sixes plundered from one over; 9 fours added to the fun.

With George eventually falling to a catch in the deep and the score on 235 for 4, Phil decided that this would be enough and declared.

Horsted's reply was strangled early by some fine bowling from Toby and Richard Edelsten; Richard returning 2 for 20 from his opening 8 over spell (including a catch at short leg by Phil to dismiss their skipper which was like a replay from the '90s). Toby's opening spell was superb and Phil was able to keep him going for 15 overs during which he snagged 4 for 33 but went past the outside edge on something like 20 occasions.

Young Max Hill making his debut returned a very creditable 1 for 16 from six overs being the other bowling highlight. Despite a late flourish from Horsted's number 9 who made an excellent 73 not out from 87 balls, the 51 overs we had allowed ourselves always looked likely to be enough and so it proved with Toby and Richard returning to close the game out with 7 overs to spare.

Tim Fuller, deputising for Kieran behind the stumps did an excellent job and bagged 2 cathes which further increased his lead at the top of the catching table!

A clinical and effctive team performance but even with Richard's excellent 3 for 22 in the book, the memorable performances were of course Bushy's 122 and Toby's excellent bowling - just failing to make a Michelle with 4 for 37 from 17.
