Smallfield 2 v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 07 May 2011 at 2pm
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won 8 wickets

Match report Second game of the season and captain Matania back from his drinking sortie among the Yorkies saw Edenbridge travel to Smallfield where last season, a win was enjoyed but it was desperately close - relying on numbers 9 and 10 Toby & Richard Edelsten to see us home chasing 180.

What a difference 9 months makes!

The Edenbridge side saw 5 changes made not just from last week but coincidentally, from the last time we met Smallfield. A quick check shows that Smallfield were 4 men different this time around.

In keeping with our way of playing last year and bearing in mind the league rules that now allow maximum points where a side chooses to field first, the season's first toss of the coin was always going to mean 'Bridge bowling first if Phil won it. He didn't (0 / 1) but Smallfield chose to bat anyway so that was ok!

Makeshift opening bowler Putters made an early breakthrough but it wasn't until the 17th over and with the score on 49 that the next wicket fell, once again to Putters but particular congratulations must go to Peter Marklew of Smallfield who sportingly walked when many wouldn't have.

Toby, by this time, had ridiculously bowled 5 maidens in his seven over spell with no tangible reward. He will bowl much worse this year but have better figures. Phil mixed up the bowling, the pick of which was Rory Martin who bowled his maximum 6 over spell to good effect, with wickets for Tim, Rory, our new "Andy Caddick" Iain lawson and Ben with the final wicket falling to a well executed run out by Putters.

Smallfield dismissed for only 114 on a decent pitch with a very quick outfield and captain Phil thinking that all Putters needed for a full set was some runs.

After standing at one end chiseling 5 in an opening stand of 59, Matania became Putters 5th wicket of the day when one of his blistering drives bounced off the bowler and on to Matania's stumps. Cue much hilarity. Even I saw the funny side. Briefly.

Putters obviously couldn't stop laughing as he was soon caught behind for 59 with the score on 64 but with Tim and Seb (the last minute replacement for a crocked Lewis) at the wicket, there were no more scares as 'Bridge romped home only 2 down and with 40 overs left in the day's play!

A very good team performance with contributions from everyone; first home game of the season and Hayley's teas to look forward to next week.
