Edenbridge Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Ide Hill on Sun 03 Jul 2011 at 2.30
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 54 runs

Match report Well it was a very hot day, but fortunately when we lost the toss once again we were put into bat, so we were able to hide from the heat. Captain Smith and Putman Jr strode to the crease with the confidence that we have all come to expect from the two of them. However, all did not go to plan for the skipper, as he returned to the clubhouse with just 4 as he got caught behind to a full swinging delivery. Levi replaced him in the middle and pushed us on with some hard hit boundaries (3 in 4 deliveries) as we got used to the conditions. However, Caruana also found himself back in the shade after a quick 21. In came Peter Moore for his Sunday 1s debut and his 2nd game for the club. Despite 10 years away from the game Peter didn't need too long to find his flow, and helped the run rate along, while Putters was maintaining his normal game. Dave reached 42 before getting out LBW to a "second-bounce yorker". Frustrated? For sure! At this point we were 81-3. Although some others chipped in, it took the tale to wag for us to get up to what we thought was a respectable score. The highlight of which was the partnership between Josh (19) and Henry (30), with sweeps, drives and plain old slogs. However, Toby (10) then tried his best to upstage them with some hitting of his own like we have never seen before from him. In the end we posted 192ao, but we knew it would require us to bowl well if we were going to take the win.

So we took to the field, and it didn't start well. Putman Sr opened the bowling but only managed 3 balls before his back gave out. And so on came sub fielder Luke "I used to play for Bridge but then I left for East Grinstead, and now I just want to come back because I'm lonely" Boakes. (I'm not sure that this nickname will catch on.) However, after an inspirational bowling change (by Bantin, and he didn't fail to remind us of it) the more loyal Boakes (Josh, 3-18) managed two wickets with his first two deliveries, both clipping the off-stump. Given that Ide Hill made such a positive start, it was a much needed breakthrough. However, it was not the wicket we needed! The remaining opener had hit a double century against us before, and so we knew it would be important...

Lo and behold...our wish came true! Sub-fielder Luke "long-nickname" Boakes took the catch off Toby's bowling (1-13). After this, Smithy came out of using the gloves (since he couldn't catch a cold with them anyway - not that I'm bitter) and came on to bowl (battling through his bad back injury - AHEM!!) and duting his second spell also took two wickets in two, but also missed out on a hat trick (2-20). HAHA! However, by this time we were well on our way to victory. With the oppo only having 10 men, the wickets were shared around the bowlers with Dan (1-30), Putman Jr (1-25) and Henry (1-2) also got some wickets.

It was well and truly a team performance, as we stuggled against some high temperatures and "suspicious" umpiring (Note: this word is used so we didn't use the word "biased"...oops! Just did!)

But anyway, another strong win for the Sunday 1s.

Drop of the day: Stephen's inability to hold onto a simple edge
Catch of the day: Luke's forward dive to get rid of the main threat
