Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Burgess Hill on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Starting the day 21 points behind long term league leaders SJM, losing Zahid Khan 2 hours before the match was not the ideal preparation. Skipper Bob got his little black book out in the hunt for another bowler and eventually managed to persuade his son's mate Tim Doe to put on some whites for the first time in a while.

With the bowling resources depleted by the loss of Zahid, Edenbridge decided to bowl first having won the toss.

Not more than a few overs into the game, the bowling attack then lost Gat Fuller before he had bowled a ball to a bizarre accident. Fielding at second slip, Gat took a ball in the eye from a deflection off Matania's hand at first slip. Looking like Ricky Hatton, Gat was forced to make the trip to Tunbridge Wells to get stitched up. Possibly a bit fierce but Gat really should have caught it - after all, he can't claim he didn't see it!

The unlucky bowler Toby had exactly the same luck throughout his 14 overs with any number of balls passing the outside edge - you won't see someone bowling as well as Toby did yesterday without taking a wicket very often. 5 maidens and only 33 runs were scant reward.

The loss of the Gat meant that a lot of responsibility rested on Steve Smith's shoulders and he dealt with that admirably. Bowling two spells of 7 overs each, Steve was constantly a handful and, just like Toby, beat the bat on numerous occasions. A return of 2 for 50 was no more than he deserved. Uncle Bob managed his longest spell of the year (9 overs) which included one wicket maiden and one double wicket maiden whilst Dave Putman, pressed into service for 10 overs bowled very well in picking up 2 wickets himself.

Dropped catches this week from Matania at slip and Mark Chatfield in the gully who redeemed himself by pouching his only other chance but an excellent run out executed by Smith & Peters.

Chasing 176 to win from a maximum of 38 overs, a good start was needed and that's what we got. For a brief period we had the surreal experience of Matania outscoring Putters but normal service was soon resumed with Dave hammering 70 in an hour, departing with the score on 101

Unhappily, the score was unchanged when Matania was dismissed and with George, Stephen (who again batted very sensibly) and then Mark losing their wickets 148 for 5 was beginning to look like it might be a problem even though Gat was now back from hospital and eager to get some value for his tenner; even persuading Bob to move him up the order, just in case!

We then saw an excellent innings from Rory Martin making his senior league debut who made 29 featuring some excellent shots in a partnership with Tim Doe, falling with the score on 174 and 2 needed for the win, Rory's innings was important and valuable.

So, a 24 point win and with SJM managing only a draw against Ardingly, the gap closes to 11 points. Four games to go and the final day down at SJM is looking increasingly like it might be a cup final.

A good team effort yesterday in support of Putters man of the match all round performance.
