Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Turners Hill on Sat 17 Jul 2010 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Starting the day in second place, 7 points behind leaders Horsted Keynes and 1 point in front of third placed SJM who were scheduled against each other, Edenbridge needed to maintain their current run of wins to stay in the top 3.

After a nightmare week for selection with so many players away, the Bridge team had 3 changes from the previous week with Lewis Warburton and Ben Porter returning and new boy Dan Afonso making his debut.

Skipper Langton lost the toss and after Turners captain deliberated and consulted with his team we were invited to field.

As a reward for his previous week's performance, Gat Fuller opened the bowling from the top end - usually reserved for nephew Toby who started this week from the pavillion end and who quickly made the first breakthrough, bowling Turners leading run scorer Mick Litchfield for only 5. Gat again bowled economically and well on his way to an unchanged 24 over spell returning 4 wickets for 95.

First change Dan Afonso replaced Toby after 17 overs and looked threatening without reward but will undoubtedly take wickets in division 3 once he has lost the match rust.

6 bowlers in total were used, all of whom bowled creditably and with Bob and Tim (a great C&B belying his age) nicking one each, Turners closed their innings after 47 overs at 207 for 7 thereby allowing only 6 bonus points - a glance at this mornings league table shows how important that was.

In the field, as well as Tim's great catch Stephen took two (one very sharp at short mid wicket) and Lewis just failed to hang on to what would have been a purler but although the ball was consistently in the air off the bat, nothing went to fielders. A good example of this would be in the 31st over when, for the first time, we did away with a 2nd slip only to see the second ball of the over fly through the space that would have been occupied by Matania's nose. It was one of those days.

Although I hate to say this, the lowlight of our fielding was the way we just didn't deal with being put under pressure - really for the first time this year. There is nothing and I mean nothing to be gained by allowing a disputed umpiring decision or a mistake in the field to sour the atmosphere between ourselves. Without Putters magnificent batting we could very easily have lost this match after conceding 50 more runs than we really should have done. We have to sort this out boys and I sincerely hope that we all give this some though during the week and come out next Saturday with a far more positive approach to setbacks.

Anyway, on to the good bit.

Putters and Phil again enjoyed a profitable opening stand (134) before Dave perished on 97 from only 53 balls in exactly 60 minutes. When Dave is striking the ball like this, there is no finer sight in Edenbridge's batting. Unless, of course, it is Matania calling for a runner in the second over of the innings!

Phil carried his bat for the 4th time this season eventually making an unbeaten 62 and NO Lewis, even though you did do all of the hard work, you can't have half of the runs.

With Tim Fuller falling LBW again early, useful contributions were made by new boy Dan and Smithy before the match was won after only 32.4 overs and with 6.2 of the 20 left.

So, to the table. SJM managed a 30 point win at Horsted Keynes which has moved them top ahead of us by 3 points and allowed us to open a small gap of 8 on Horsted.

Every game from here on in is winnable and needs to be won to set up what is beginning to look like a league decider at SJM on the last day of the season - we have what would effectively be a cup final to look forward to IF we can continue to get the results in the next 5 games.

Champagne moment: Putters 97 once again winning the match but avoiding a jug
Guinness moment: Lewis' running between the wickets (thanks mate)
Prostate examination moment: onfield rows between ourselves
