Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Streat on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 5 Wickets

Match report First is first. Captain Bob must hate his team, winning the toss and making his beloved youngsters (including Phil and Tim) field first on the hottest day of the year. On the plus side fielding first = more sandwiches! Streat was the opposition; incidentally the last team Bridge have lost against over a year ago. We knew it was going to be a tough game so accurate bowling and sharp fielding were in order.

Toby and Zahid again opened up and I must add are forming a very dangerous opening bowling partnership. Although Toby didn’t get a wicket he was the most economical bowler in Bridge’s attack this week. Pressure was mounting early and Zahid made the first breakthrough by clean bowling the Streat opener with a great delivery.

Enter Streat Batsman number 3 who produced the flukiest 50 that I have ever witnessed. After a run saving seven overs Toby was replaced by Jimmy Gardiner from the top end. Jimmy did everything he could to break the long lasting partnership and was so unlucky not to pick up a wicket, most of the runs James went for were air shots just beating the fielders however the partnership looked like breaking, it was Sir Bob who was the bowler producing arguably the best ball he has bowled since trapping WC Grace way back in 1894 at a celebrity garden party.

Returning to the team Gat Fuller replaced the unlucky Jimmy at the top end and looked dangerously accurate from the start. It was a superb 11.5 overs from Gat which resulting in him picking up 5 wickets (4 clean bowled) and therefore becoming the Saturday 2’s leading wicket taker, hats off to the man! Tim and Stephen took the other two wickets which were up for grabs by bowling both batsmen, Stephen using his pace and Tim using his.....well.....erm......wonky, distracting run-up?! Streat finished up on a total of 202 after declaring (which annoyingly disrupted Gat’s chances of a hat-trick). Kieran again kept well and I believe is getting more confident behind the stumps every game.

To the batting......

Putters (who was desperate for a big Saturday score) succeeded in doing so by smashing 88 of around 40 balls, which included cracking one of his sixes towards our new bbq bearing, sun soaking fans and nearly putting the woman into a coma in the process, it was a great, entertaining innings from Dave who was disappointed not to get his first 100 of the year after eventually being bowled. Tim went in at 3 and was unfortunate to get out early on the dead wicket, not much he could do about it really. Our new signing going by the name of Daniel Ott was next in and also played a very entertaining innings getting his way to 47 hitting some great boundaries before unfortunately being caught and not making his half century. Phil as usual was his grafting self and although finding it difficult with his injury battled on and got to 28 before also being caught. Stephen Smith added to the total by scoring 17 relatively quick also playing some nice strokes. Zahid and Jimmy wrapped up the win securing the 24 point win taking us 2nd in the league table.

Special mention to: Putters (great innings but 100 next time please!), Bob ( bowled well in first game back for a couple of weeks), Gat ( best spell this year, unlucky not to get 6) and Dan (great knock mate and looking in fine form in only 2nd or 3rd game back!)

Champagne moment(s): Gat’s 5 wickets and Dave’s 88

Wally brain of the match: Edenbridge’s persistent fan taking 4 hours to fully put the marquee up!

Quote of the match: After being asked about Dave’s batting the South African Streat player replied “Your a one man team!” to which Graham Scott answered “ How do you feel losing to one man then!”. That shut the Proteas plonker up!
