Roffey v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 12 Jun 2010 at NOTE: 1pm start
Match was Drawn

Match report An early start to accomodate all of the masochists that say they enjoy watching England play football, at least nobody was guilty of a Rob Green moment!

On a dampish wicket, Roffey skipper chose to bowl even though their 11th man arrived in his whites 2 minutes before the start - the first sign that the wicket might do a bit early on and so it proved.

Against the moving ball, Matania and Bushell set a solid platform with the first wicket (Bushell 65) falling in the 21st over. George was fluent and effective for the second week running which is just as well as skipper for the day Matania struggled again to find his early season form - scoring his first run in four goes after 30 minutes on his way to a laboured 20.

Roffey skipper Jim Barnes was the pick of the bowlers and troubled every batsman - the ball to dismiss Watts climbing off just short of a length and taking the glove on its way to the keeper a good example of the difficult batting conditions - Blossoms Park it wasnt!

Tim Fuller once again provided the steadying influence (30) that allowed Dave Putnam and Steve Smith freedom to play as they like to. Putters, according to the oppo being the unluckiest batsman of the day being caught by a fielder who normally drops everything. Smithy being taken on the boundary trying to repeat an earlier six. Good contributions again from James Gardiner (17) and Kieran Peters with yet another not out (11) allowed Phil to declare with 202 on the board after 2 hours 40 but only 42 overs.

In the field, special mention must be made of Lewis Warburton who had the unenviable task of looking after fine leg and third man for most of the day but what a valuable effort this was - probably saved us 20 to 30 runs and in my opinion, was what stopped us losing this game - well done and thanks Lewis!

Further praise goes to Kieran who had to deal with a lot of leg side rubbish. The 12 byes were not his fault and the 21 wides help illustrate why this game was drawn, not won.

Toby Fuller, apart from a couple of overs, was evidently suffering from his previous weeks exertions at Uni and was nowehere near the level that he usually delivers, Richard Edelsten was his normal steady self going at under 3 an over without ever really threatening and Steve Smith was quick, hostile but ultimately not straight enough to pick up a 5th wicket. With George uncharacteristically wayward and Tim Fuller not used Roffey managed to stay very much in the hunt throughout their innings.

With the score at 98 for 3 at the start of the 20 overs and all results possible, Phil turned to James Gardiner's debut bowling slow - there are times when decisions you make as a captain make you look like an idiot and others that make you look a genius. James's dismissal of the Roffey opener with his 3rd ball and excellent 10 overs meant the latter!

This was a really good, hard game of league cricket where we battled to a decent score, gave ourselves enough time to force a result (eventually bowling 47 overs) and in which a win, draw or a loss was equally possible right up until the last over. Captain's reflections are: Maybe I should have bowled Tim, definitely should have gone with a hunch to put in a short leg in Smithy's last but one over but didn't and real pleasure in seeing James' bowling. With Lewis also capable of the slow stuff, we are shaping up to have an effective and varied attack.

Net result of yesterday's results see Edenbridge moving up to second in the table, albeit the gap between us and top spot increasing from 5 to 16.

With no game next week, our next outing is against the league leaders Haywards Heath so no comment necessary on how important that one is!

One other point worth noting is that we are now the only side in the division after 5 games to remain unbeaten.
