Cuckfield v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won 3 Wkts

Match report A hot day in Cuckfield and a major test of our credentials against a team relegated from Division 2 last year and one that has had much the better of corresponding fixtures over the years.

Bridge 2s had two changes from that which put in last week's convincing performance - Zahid being called up to the first team and Niraj making way for George Bushell. It is always difficult to change a winning team, especially when those losing out on a place are as popular as our Ninja but difficult decisions have to be made and George's bowling ability won him the nod. The other change saw Toby return from representative duty.

Skipper Bob lost the toss but Cuckfield's decision to bat first saved the decision to put them in so at least the bit before the start went well.

During the next 30 overs it is hard to find anything to write about that didn't go well with Bridge's fielding and catching at least equal to, if not better than last week's excellent effort. The one "catch" that got away was an early effort by Lewis that, had it stuck, would have been a serious contender for catch of the season. If Cuckfield's batsmen thought that they could expect second lives from here in, they were sadly mistaken. Ben Porter started the fun and games by plucking out one of his specials at gully off Bob's bowling, Phil Matania then got in on the act by first pouching a sharp chance at second slip to give Toby his wicket then in the next over bagging a catch at square leg to give Bob his second wicket of the day.

Lewis Warburton, Kieran Peters and James Gardiner all took very good catches and with run outs excellently effected by Kieran with returns from James Gardiner and Dave Putnam only the most churlish would remark that the Cuckfield total of 111 all out contained as many as 14 extras including 10 wides and 3 no balls.

With an early tea taken and forever to bat on the way to 112, Bridge couldn't really have got off to a worse start. George was first on his way in only the second over, Phil following in the third leaving the innings at one run for two wickets in 20 minutes. the Cuckfield captain put in an excellent first stint of nine overs, 1 for 24 whilsy Tim Fuller and Dave Putnam steadied the ship. A good idea of how difficult run getting was can be gathered by a look at Tim's stats - 18 runs before being choked off LBW from 59 balls in 80 minutes is not his normal fluent rate but with their skipper bowling well, this was exactly what the team needed. Tim's solidity at one end allowed Dave and then Stephen Smith a degree of freedom which Stephen in particular made the most of on his way to a 48 minute run a ball 39. With the Bridge reply at 96 for 5 and the Cuckfield skipper returnung for a sceond spell - even faster down the hill - all four results looked eminently possible.

Losing Lewis then James with the scores on 101 and 106 respectively and without the comforting presence of grumpy Fuller at one end, it was seriously beginning to look like we might be just about to throw away a fantastic chance for 30 points. Fortunately for Bob's heart condition, Kieran remained undefeated whilst allowing big Ben Porter to win the match; closing out with the best 4 I have seen all year!

So, 30 points in the bag from what was always going to be a really tough game against a decent team. Fielding once again our strongest suit but a game in which everybody contributed - batsmen not scoring runs taking wickets and catches and you can't ask for more than that.
