Hurstpierpoint v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 08 May 2010 at 2.00

Match report A six point return from a game against the opposition who, in last year's fixture, were bowled out for 56. Disappointing.

Having won the toss and chosen to bowl, Edenbridge needed to restrict Hurst in wet conditions, especially the outfield which made boundaries hard to make from shots along the floor but despite Gareth's solid return to second team action and a threatening opening spell from Toby, we didnt quite manage.

Hurst fielded two first team players in John Pike (71 not out and carried his bat) and Matt Parsons (67) who were the mainstay of the Hurst innings. Bob Langton bowled extremely well in the latter part of the Hurst knock (your reporter believes that it would be good for the team to see the skipper bowling more often if his carcass allows it!) returning 0 for 26 off 9 but with Parsons being particularly severe on Tim's bowling, the score of 179 for 6 would prove to be just beyond us.

Edenbridge's reply got off to a steady start with Phil and George Bushell doing well to post an opening stand of 54 in the face of some tidy bowling on a pitch that was starting to misbehave. George took a rising ball on the elbow early on but displayed his growing maturity and confidence in not allowing that to rattle him, eventually falling in the 17th of what would prove to be 40 overs.

Tim Fuller, in his first outing of the season, put on a further 36 with Phil before a rush of blood saw him step away to cut a straight ball and missing. Ninja flourished briefly, hitting one excellent 6 and one further 4 before falling LBW for the second time in his two visits to the crease this year.

With the light failing badly, Phil and Marc Ng tried to up the rate after the impetus of Ninja's brief 15 ball stay but this came at the cost of Nugget's wicket; Phil and James Gardiner then decided that 10 an over in the last 5 with Hurst's opener back on and in very dark conditions was not an option and safely saw out the remaining overs.

Whilst it is fair to say that 6 points out of a game that would have given us 8 had it not been completed was disappointing, especially since only one other team in the league managed to achieved an equally low figure, a real positive must be that we showed that we would not be a team to roll over as might have been the case two years ago.

A personal highlight would have to be being applauded for a fifty twice (having been dropped 3 times) but perhaps the most significant recollection from the game is Gareth managing to send down 13 overs off the reel without needing to stretchered off. We all hope that Gat stays fit for the season as there is no doubt that he will prove to be a major wicket taker for the 2s this year.

It will be a very interesting 3 way contest in family Fuller for the season's leading wicket taker award!

2010 off and running - Ardingly away next week so lets all hope for better weather!
