Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday2nd XI v Hurst II on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 1.30
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won 8 wickets

Match report For the final time in the league this year, Skipper Langton tossed and for the first time in ages, lost.

Given what was to follow, Hurstpierrepoint's decision to bat first was an odd one; perhaps prompted by the fact that 2 of their players arrived late - about the same time as Big Ben Porter who made the journey twice, the second time with his kit!

Toby Fuller opened the bowling from the top end looking for a repeat of his perfomance from the previous week but with enough wickets to make sure he finished above Tim Fuller. Just about the last thing that Tim said to the team before leaving the pavilion was that he hadn't dropped a catch all season. Silly boy.

Toby's first ball bounced and took the edge on it's way to Tim at first slip who proceeded to spill it but even this wasn't enough to stop Toby from finishing as the team's highest wicket taker of the season with 21 in league and cup, narrowly pipping Zahid who ended with 20.

Between them, Toby and Zahid proved to be far too good for the Hurst batting and even with two other dropped catches (James G and Bobby Langton, shame on you!), Kieran Peters behind the sticks with 4 catches (the first 3 wickets to fall and one, off the gloves a superb take), Ninja with 1 and Tim Fuller with 2 (the second of which Kieran could have taken for a 5 catch bag) made up for other lapses.

The Hurst innings lasted only an hour and 16 minutes - 18.3 overs, closed out by Millard who was brought on to replace Toby to bowl at Hurst's 12 year old.

Matania and Millard opened Bridge's reply and with Matania bowled (again!!) early, Tim Fuller and eventually the Ninja saw the team to a clinical win in only 7.4 overs - 40 minutes.

Tim's 26 not out took him to a season's total of 406 (including one hundred and 2 fifties) which, together with his 19 wickets at an average of 16.84 (including best bowling of 5 for 16) made the decision on player of the year a very easy one for Bob and PJ.

With the clock standing at 4pm and tea taken, a long drinking session before dinner at Mr Ali's beckoned. Unfortunately, this pleasant prospect was completely wrecked by some idiot who suggested a 20:20 match which we also won comfortably. The highlight of the match was obviously Phil Matania returning the third best bowling figures of 1 for 12 from his 2 crafted overs full of flight, guile and 5 wides.

Zahid took 4 catches at mid on and scored 51 from 33 balls, James Gardiner's 2 for 7 and 29 plus Toby's 3 for 8 bowling leg spin the other noteworthy contributions.

Finally, we got to the Old Eden just in time for a cheeky half dozen before repairing to the presentation dinner.

So the season ends with Bridge II finishing a very creditable 4th, 16 points from the final promotion place and a league record of 5 wins, 3 draws (two winning, one losing) and 5 losses.

Toby and Zahid's bowling in the last 3rd of the season, Tim's consistent performances with both bat and ball throughout the year and the development of Kieran behind the stumps epecially gives us real reason to be positive about our chances for promotion next year.

Mention must also be made of the excellent contribution with the bat throughout the year by George Bantin who made 267 from only five innings at an average of 53 and Phil Millard's 218 from 9 at 36

From the bowling point of view, Toby Zahid and Tim took the lion's share of the wickets with 21 (at 16 including best of 6 for 40), 20 (at 12 including a 6 for 55) and 19 (at 16 including 5 for 16) respectively.

It is odd to say that, throughout the season, our fielding, especially catching, has varied from excellent to crap. Toby's C&B, Big Ben's one handed grab and Tim's slip catching being good examples of the former.

from a personal point of view, I have really enjoyed the season strengthening old friendships and making a few new ones along the way. I sincerely hope that we can stick together as a team for next year when our season's target must be far more stringent than this year's simple one of losing fewer games than we won or drew.

Wishing you all a very pleasant winter!!

PS - Hayley has insisted that I give her thanks to everybody who chipped in for the flowers and to PJ who kindly organised it. Personally, i thought that this was the least you could do...........(mutter, mutter, grumble).... :-)
