Edenbridge Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Cowden on Sun 18 May 2008 at 2.30
Edenbridge Cricket Club Lost by 55 runs

Match report Well another sunday fixture, and another game that started off with doubt over the pitch! Luckily the sun came out enought to dry the pitch enough, and give us a game.
We won the toss and chose to field, but we quickly found a strong batting line-up facing us. The field was more a day of "what if's" than a day of "what happened"! Dropped catches gave Groombridge the chances that they needed to post a huge total of 230 for 5. Dan Ott took 2 cathces in the field, but some of the juniors put in strong displays with Luke Boakes bowling 5 overs and giving away just 7 runs, and Nick Jeffrey taking the top of off-stump with a peach of a delivery early in the innings.
However, the runs tallying up or not, we were complimented on our effort in the field, and with a short boundary it seemed anything could happen.

Unfortunately, despite my optimism in the previous sentence, it's fair to say the innings didn't start well. In fact, it was bloody horrific. Joycie fell to an LBW in the first over, and no-one was seeming to stick around very much after that. Despite boasting a 50 not out in the morning, young Seb Goodhew was quickly caught behind, and continued to sulk for the rest of the afternoon, claiming that he was planning on "giving up on cricket" (a dream that we all share Seb). We then saw Kristian Johns bowled, and Niraj Perera caught, leaving the top order in tatters, and the score a a desolate 9 for 4.
This brought Jack Barker (a recent addition to the club) and captain Danny Ott (who is writing this boasting of his own achievements) to the crease with work to do.
Over the next hour, we saw dropped catches a plenty, a few wonderful leaves from Jack, and needless to say a few complete swipes at the ball hoping for the best. But we quickly moved towards 100 for 4, and looking like a genuine threat to the total if we could keep going. However, this was not so...and as you expect with edenbridge, we got so far, only to lose it again. Jack got bowled by a very unexpected swinging yorker and finished on 28, and after a bit of luck Dan Ott was dismissed on 88 (and even I have to admit it was a shockingly bad shot).
We then enjoyed a few more shots from Nathan Cook who looked like a promising talent for the future, as he scored a quick 19 late on, but we soon ended on 175 a.o. It was a brave run chase but 55 runs short of the target set by Groombridge.

Despite this loss at the hands of the more experienced Groombridge team I think it's fair to say we never quit, and gave our all. We've plenty to be proud of, and we'll be building on that next sunday (where the top order may even have someone into double figures as they boast over their scores SEBASTIAN!!!!!)

Unlucky team, but it looks like we're on the way up!

THE AWARDS:
TFC (Thanks For Coming): This award is for the person who turned up, did bugger all, and then left again.
This week we have a tie over Seb Goodhew, and Niraj Perera.
Seb because he couldn't seem to catch the back end of a barn door behind the stumps, but still insisted on standing up to every medium pacer! AND because of his "short and sharp" time at the crease!
Niraj because having stood at slip, he promptly liked to let the juniors do the running for him (although I can see that's what they might be there for), and after his quick QUACK-tastic innings he left in a strop with me for some reason!

All those present are welcome to cast their votes to me on 07817 542719! HAHA!

MOMENT OF THE DAY:
Ross Baugh's girlfriend Ellie: The comment of how cricket might have been invented!
"Was it when a group of scientists were on their breaks?"
Thanks to her for the comment! We will be offering a prize for the "Moment of the season"
