Lingfield IV v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 03 Sep 2016 at 13:00
Match was Drawn (Yes you guessed it ---- more rain !)

Match report The weather forecast looked grim. Rain due around 6pm it said, so the skipper's plan was to win the toss, bowl them out quickly & cheaply & then chase the runs down before the deluge. Simple ......... as long as you win the toss. When does Fisty ever do that ! So we were forced to make the running in the game.
We got under way as soon as all the mole hills on the outfield had been flattened with a variety of instruments. Sadly both Messrs Joyce & Woodman fell early to an opening attack that was probably about a third of their combined ages ! So Mike & Coxy joined forces in trying to push the game along. Trouble was, it didn't seem to matter how hard they hit the ball, it would't cross the boundary. With both of them suffering from joints that have either been replaced or simply don't work anymore, quick singles were off the card for now. Despite that, the 50 partnership was secured as we moved towards bonus point land. Fallowell's loopy doopy non spinning filth did for both of them (well ......... we won't go into one of the dismissals !) but steady accumulation from Dan & power hitting from Wardy was moving us towards maximum bonus points in good time, but then Fisty sprung a surprise early declaration as the clouds began to mass. Another two batting points would't have made any difference. Shot of the day was Wardy's perfectly studied forward defence. Your roving reporter even got a photo of it to prove it (see the pictures gallery). It looked as if aliens had suddenly taken over his body until normal Wardy service was resumed & Coxy & Joycey were searching the woods for lost balls.
So a quick cup of cheery brew later & we were out in the field nervously watching the sky. Jimmy roared in from the Mole Hills end & made the early breakthrough, having Lingfield's (probably) only quality batsman snaffled at the wicket. He followed that quickly by clinging onto a skier to give Kingy an early wicket too & then had the other opener. So far, so good. Lingfield then appeared to take the Hurstpierpoint option, trying to bat for the rain. Well it duly arrived unfortunately. Dan stepped up to the plate, giving it a rip, even with a wet ball. Spinning his web of intrigue he managed to prise out the Lingfield skipper along with two others.
Having played through the persistent (but not exactly heavy) rain the inevitable eventually happened. After the number eight batsman had, somewhat theatrically, managed to let go of his bat attempting a slog sweep off Hilly the umpires told us they'd had enough (despite howls of protest from the fielders).
Our promotion efforts had been thwarted once again through having had four (yes ..... four) games abandoned through the weather. Nobody else had more than two abandoned. Sadly Streat, who at one time had looked like losing badly to Brunswick, also had their game abandoned, gaining ten points & staying ahead of us. No good saying we missed a point here or a wicket there. If Ifs & ands were pots & pans, there'd be no call for tinkers, as my Nan used to say. So next season we still have the prospect of travelling to exotic locations like Palmers & enduring Kenton & his straight bat at Hurst. Roll on 2017. See you at nets.
