Match report NORMAL SERVICE AT THE TOSS IS RESUMED AS WARD'S COMEBACK CONTINUES
Arriving at Cuckfield's spanking new changing facilities after the wet week, Fisty went out for the call &, as usual, called wrong & we were sent in on a damp & playful wicket. Although the ball was jagging around & the wicket was a bit up & down (sometimes alarmingly so), messrs Cox & Woodman went about their business in the usual calm & assured manner against a young attack, keeping out the good ones & punching the bad ones. A 50 opening stand was achieved without too many alarms & they went on to 70 odd before Coxy got one that reared off a length & took his thumb on the way through to the keeper. Fisty carried on regardless &, when joined by Mike Martin, the two carried the score through into bonus points land. Although 220 would have been nice, it was difficult to score at any decent rate given the playfulness of the track. Mike powered on to the twenties but then got out trying to force things. Fisty also got one that bounced & forced him to play on. 200 was looking distant until Wardy strolled out for his second comeback knock &, first ball, deposited the young medium pacer for a huge six over long on which nearly ended up in the grounds of the next door mansion. A quick fire knock (if anything Wardy does can be considered quickfire !) then followed with another couple of boundaries which almost endangered the flypast of the local Tiger Moth circling above the ground. Agonisingly short of full points, the innings closed following Wardy's run out, at 196.

At the usual splendid tea spread there was consternation at the thought of Leicester possibly topping the Premiership & West Ham having their early season bubbles burst. Tense times.

Jimmy Witt & Gat again took the new ball, both being able to bowl downhill from either end. Gat got us the early breakthrough via a smart piece of stump work (best we saw all day !), having the opener stumped down the leg side. Jimmy joined in soon after with Tim F clinging onto a smart catch. G man entered the attack with his turn & bounce after Jimmy finished his opening spell. Another smart stumping followed after one of the Cuckfield youngsters was urged by the EB chatter to run down the wicket to give it some long 'andle. Wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals whilst at the other end "Buck" Rogers started to endanger Tim & Wardy's vans parked in the car park. It was only a matter of time before he picked out one of the five boundary riders. In fact he ended up perishing via a thick outside edge to G Man at point ! That wasn't the end of the entertainment though as the skipper then started to club all bowlers to all parts of Mid Sussex. Eventually a returning Gat forced an error & Wardy's massive mitts gobbled up the first of two fine running (Wardy running ?) catches. Fuller Senior ended a fine crafty spell with four-fer showing us all the benefits of bowling to your field. How we've missed his craft while he's been sunning himself on a Greek beach.

All in all, another fine late season win. 28 points keeps us in touch with potential promotion. Third place, two points behind Cuckfield (but only two in front of Balcombe) & only 17 points off the lead. Providing we pick up at least another win from our last two games & if other results go our way, we could be in Div Three next year & avoid having to go to Palmers (who are relegated).
