Cudham Wyse v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 28 Apr 2007 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Lost Lost by 4 wickets

Match report On another glorious spring day Cudham Wyse provided stiff opposition after being well beaten in the corresponding fixture last season. Winning the toss Cudhams's skipper had no hesitation in making Edenbridge bat first on a wicket freshly cut only half an hour before. Early on Edenbridge lost wickets to some accurate bowling from Rabani and Brockett and runs became difficult on a wicket that provided a little extra bounce and a lush outfield. Another solid knock of 31 from Tim Cox provided the majority of runs but at 66 for 4 he was a victim of the shooting finger of Scott Beaumont, much to his disgust, and with 5 down it looked like an early retirement to the local hostelry was on the cards and 16 pints of Harveys per man. However, a very fine innings of 65 from our resident copper PC Simon Williams ably supported by Seb Goodhew and new recruit Simon Walker saw Edenbridge to a total of 165 which at tea seemed a reasonable total on a slightly unpredictable early season strip. Slightly hampered by having to use an old ball the Edenbridge opening attack was not as intimidating as usual and the CW openers of Hesenden & Wood got off to a reasonable start especially Hesenden who hit some lusty blows although being dropped on 4, a costly mistake as it turned out, off the bowling of Fuller. After this let off Hesenden took full advantage and with a mixture of some elegant drives and some fortunate hoicks, falling just short of fielders, rattled the score along to a position where only 5 an over was needed off the last 20 overs. Despite taking wickets late in the innings Hesenden saw CW home with 4 balls to spare and scored a maiden century in the process. Tim Cox sportingly congratulated him at the end despite trying to decapitate him earlier when Mr. Hesenden had the temerity to take a stride down the wicket. All in all a good game of cricket and good preparation before the start of the league and cup campaign.
MEMORABLE MOMENT: A cracking catch by PC Simon Williams, upheld by the 3rd Umpire and video evidence, at second slip to round off a good day for our resident copper as his wife, children and outlaws looked on in proud delight.
TEA: 7/10: A fine selection of cakes including tarts and a chocolate sponge rounded off a good selection of sandwiches including an early season appearance for corned beef (not tinned). A vastly underrated filling I feel out of fashion since the 1982 Falklands war but making a long awaited comeback and not before time!
