Holmesdale v Edenbridge Cricket Club Under 14 on Sun 17 Jun 2007 at 10.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won By 78 runs

Match report Week 5 of the Border League season saw the first rematch of the year, away to Holmesdale.
After a damp Saturday it was a relief to see the clouds light and fluffy with the sun putting in an occasional show. It was also a relief to see that Holmesdale had prepared a wicket with only a little grass and of a different hue to the rest of the square.
An arm injury for Vickery saw a last minute re-shuffle and Freeman taking over the captaincy, Vickery moving to umpire and young Cook stepping into the breech.
Bridge batted first and, after losing the captain early (weighed down by the cares of high office), took advantage of some friendly bowling.
Although the wicket was a little two-paced Phillips batted carefully for 24 and shared in good partnerships with Boakes, 9 and then Bushell. George's innings was one of the highlights of the season so far, a chanceless 52 retired with 9 boundaries, a man of the match performance (closely followed by Sephie Freeman who weed strategically on the opposition's blanket; note that Sephie is Alex's dog, his father is Nick).
The latter part of the innings saw steady acceleration with Bence putting his foot on the pedal. Kieran gives the ball a deceptive thwack and hit the shot of the day with a glorious front foot cover drive for four before being retired for 29. Cook was also retired for a pleasant 10. That saw Debrett and Dodgson have some fun with the last few balls and Jake creaming the last ball for a smashing boundary.
Without seeming to be on top form the boys still amassed an incredible 195 runs; surely a BL record! Of course the 43 extras helped as did the relatively short boundaries. The Holmesdale fielding was not at all bad. In fact their throwing in was very accurate, particularly the chuck that hit their unsuspecting umpire smack on the ankle. The only redeeming feature of that nasty blow was the ten minute break that allowed the scorer to scoot off for a comfort break.
Thus lunch was taken. The Bridge boys managed to break the visiting team record for doughnut eating; delightful. The only question was, would the stodge impede the athleticism of our bowlers.
Of course, with the score at 2 wickets for 0 runs and at 8 for 3 the answer appeared to be no. The question on everyones lips was whether Holmesdale would make double figures.
Of course the Bridge boys decided that they wanted a closer game and suddenly decided to offer up a veritable curates egg of a bowling performance.
Fortunately the captain decided to have a straight, full and and fast day and returned the great figures of 3 wickets for 5 runs from his 4 overs. Debrett also nipped in at the end with some pitched up swingers that earned him 3 wickets for only 1 run.
I only hope that the generous feast of legside and short stuff were an aberration that will not continue next week.
The fielding was generally good with only a couple of tragedies on the boundary. The catching was very sharp with a cracker taken by Jervis at silly mid and one running, diving catch from Bence a likely catch of the season. Peters was his usual tidy self behind the timbers. Kieran obviously looks a lonely soul; that can be the only reason why we almost always seem to end up with a leg slip towards the end of an inning. Do we find 11 fielders too many I wonder? Is deep, backward, square too lonely a fielding position (the answer is probably yes if you are doing it at both ends as poor Dodgson was for a time today).
Thus the run and doughnut feast ended with maximum points and a pleasing first half to the season is over.
Will the boys hold their nerve on the back-stretch; will the coach hold his; will these match reports get longer, more literate, interesting even; does anybody read them anyway?
Tune in to the cricket site they are all talking about for more jollity as the season progresses.
