Lindfield v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday2nd XI on Sat 15 May 2010 at 2.00
Edenbridge Cricket Club Won by 65 runs

Match report For some reason that even the opposition skipper didn't know, the game was played at Clayton's ground rather than Lindfield's normal one. The fact that Clayton got promoted last year with a decent haul of batting bonus points and memories of the corresponding fixture from last year when around 550 runs were shared by both teams in a very high scoring draw indicated that the game would be dominated by batsmen. Oops.

This was probably the worst wicket I have seen since Crowhurst Park in the '90s and batting was definitely not easy.

Bridge got off to a poor start with Putters going early. Phil and Stephen Smth flourished briefly with Stephen dispatching the Lindfield opening bowler's second over for 4 fours from 5 balls before becoming the first victim of the Clayton groundsman.

Phil and Tim Fuller then began the rebuilding process, both batting very solidly before Phil's attempt to impersonate Lindford Christie left him an inch short of completing a second. At 67 for 3 on a dodgy track, the wheels could easily have come off.

Lewis Warburton stayed only briefly with Tim before Ninja strode to the wicket having learned from Phil's misjudgement and played an unusual mix of shots - it's not often you see more singles than boundaries in Ninja's analysis!

Big Ben having waited two weeks for his first knock of the season missed the spinner and was stumped off his first ball. Two match fees for one ball representing as much value for his match fees as a bicycle for a goldfish.

James Gardiner soon followed and with the score at 113 for 7, prospects of a win of any sort were starting to look as dark as the skies above the South Downs. Tim Fuller, however, remained as a colossus and all it needed was for someone to stay with him whilst Bridge's 2009 man of the season found a way to drag us to respectability. Actually, Zahid's innings of 27 in his partnership of 46 with Tim was so much more than that. Displaying a real understanding of what was needed, Zahid blasted two sixes and 2 fours but essentially, took the sting out of the Lindfield attack.

Unfortunately neither Kieran nor Bob could stay quite long enough and the Bridge innings closed 2 runs short of maximum batting points but to be fair, there were any number of occasions during the innings when we would cheerfully have settled for 30 or 40 less than we eventually achieved.

So, to the bowlers.

Ardingly's openers were in trouble from the first over with Zahid making excellent use of the poor pitch. A return of 2 for 18 from 8 overs plus two catches added to his knock under pressure gained my vote for MOM.

Skipper Langton again hauled the protesting body through 8 overs and by the time both bowlers were rested, the Lindfield innings was in trouble.

14 overs later it was all over with James Gardiner picking up one, Tim Fuller 2 (one with the worst ball he has bowled all season), Smithy a couple and Putters one from his only over and that a maiden!

A 28 point win in difficult conditions is particularly pleasing but even more so is the fact that the team fielding was at least equal to batting and bowling with Lewis Warburton, James Gardiner and Stephen Smith particularly outstanding. I cannot remember a performance in the field where the catching, ground fielding (particularly the backing up) and intensity were as good as this. It makes the bowlers' job so much easier and the oppo's so much more difficult when we field like this!

For the second week in a row, we showed real backbone as a team - gaining a result in games that would have been lost only two seasons ago. With Toby available next week and Gareth soon to return from domestic duties there is going to be a real choice for Bob in the field. If we can maintain the quality in the field our prospects for the visit to Cuckfield on Saturday look bright.
