Balcombe v Edenbridge Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 2.00
Match was Drawn

Match report Having never played against Balcombe before, I have to say I really like their ground. Any club where you have to travel down what looks like a dead end and then down through a farmers field wins points with me.

After the glories of the week before, we appraoched the game in high spirits, and welcomed back Tim Cox and Matt Cox from their holiday. Also welcomed back was Jon Woodman, a la new Helmett.

It was also nice to see the President, Sir David Brown, to come and watch the team play.

In all honesty this game was always looking like a difficult one to win. The pitch was very flat and the only thing to do was chase. In order to chase down a total you need to bowl well, we did not. Special mention must go to Hilly, it was a top spell that deserved better, the rest of us apologise for letting you good work go to waste.

With the bat, it was simple, get a good start, we didn't loosing both openers early, a rather controversial edge from Jon's point of view, the other a run out that I am sure George will learn from. Graham batted well and dug in when needed, allowing a fantastic innings from Matt Cox. This year we have seen glimpses of what Matt can do, today it was evident for all to see. Matt decided to tee off and hit some fantastic shots on his way to 97, unfortunately getting bowled going for the jugular. He said if he batted at six he would get me runs, he did and I will be hoping he asks requests again. This partnership ensured we were never in trouble and the game rather played out to a rather uneventful draw.

Luckily though, to cheer up the cricket it was the last night of Balcombes cricket week, and a fantastic spread including Hog Roast and proper bitter was available for one and all. So nice to have good grub after a match, a fixture I hope we can keep for next year.

Tea: 9 1/2 out of 10, excellent effort, lucky to coincide with the cricket, however a top spread with excellent victoria sponge cake.

Champagne moment: 97 by Matt Cox, an excellent innings to watch.

Funny Moment: After refusing a single to stay on strike for the last ball of the match, and with the game safe, bets were starting to be made on what a certain Luke Boakes would do. Well its obvious isn't it, try a reverse sweep and miss it, silly boy.
